The Austrian Economic Chamber, the WIFI IKT (international transfer of know how) and the Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have decided to cooperate so as to establish “career advice and job centres” in Saudi Arabia.
As part of this project, the ibw is going to develop an online job information tool. The CAT – Career Advisory Tool, which is comparable to the BIC (job information computer) of the Austrian Economic Chamber, will not only offer job information, but also tips on what job to choose and a profile of interests that provides aid for one’s first orientation.
It is the aim of the project DYNOT (Dynamic Online Tool for Guidance) to develop a dynamic online tool for career advice teachers, as well as career advisors and consultants. With the aid of the tool, the current national and trans-national demand of qualification, both formal and informal, that companies in the IT sector have, will be made available to the target group mentioned. It is also intended to function as a possible benchmark for companies. Due to the demands changing constantly, for example in the wake of technical innovation, this tool will have to be dynamic, i.e., a platform based on computing. Companies will be able to repeatedly change, complete and assess their demands on the platform. For the time being, the project is focussed on the sector of information and communication technologies; a subsequent extension to other sector is possible.
Cooperational partners wanted: if you would like to participate in the project advisory board, please write to zdrahal@ibw.at . We are looking for companies in the information and communication technologies sector that are ready to name, assess and update qualificational demands in their operating field.
In early July 2005, operative work began on the Austrian EQUAL project “The Alternative: Entrepreneurship”, one of the project partnerships that was given the go-ahead in the second application round for EQUAL. The project, which will last for two years, wants to offer the alternative of entrepreneurship to women who have problems accessing the labour market for various reasons through well directed support. The Economic Chamber of the Burgenland is financially responsible and thus also mainly responsible for the project. The Palz & Partner Work Life Balance Consulting KEG is in charge of co-ordinating the contents. The ibw is concerned with the co-ordination of the first project module, as part of which innovative models for micro loans are developed. This is based on an Austria-wide survey among female entrepreneurs and an investigation of international cases of best practice.
This article presents background information for the establishment of vocational orientation centres and especially the CAT (Career Advisory Tool) in the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia. Therefore, the focus is on vocational education and on qualificational as well as organisational aspects concerning the labour market and it does not present an overall picture of the Saudi-Arabian society. The background information has been derived from a 10-day-study visit of the author in the kingdom in June 2005.
Foreign Language Competition 2005
This school year, vocational schools were asked to participate in the Foreign Language Competition of 2005 in the category English, for the first time. 54 students applied for the Lower Austrian regional competition – a number that exceeds all expectations.
The last few years have witnessed increased efforts to implement entrepreneurship education also at universities. This led to a broad range of education and further training activities as well as accompanying motivation and support programs especially for university students and graduates, so as to motivate them to found or take over a company and to give them support in founding and developing their business. Due to the high costs of these measures, their efficiency and effectiveness are increasingly being questioned. Thus, systematic evaluation of these measures is gaining importance. Against this background, this contribution features results of an explorative study on how to design and assess university programs, as well as evaluation concepts. Moreover, ideas and concepts for the design of evaluations are derived from these.
Kommerzialrat Mr. Egon Blum comments on the importance of the dual training system for the Austrian economy, presents project 06 and explains the concept of ‘practitioner jobs’, considering as example the apprenticeship profession of metal processing, which is going to be newly decreed this year. Besides reviewing the Job Championship of 2005, he will also give an outlook on future challenges.
The preparation of special data on prior school education of vocational school students and apprentices in their first year of 2002/03, provided by the Federal Ministry of Education, gives insight into the distribution according to school types regarding students who then start an apprenticeship. The tables and reference charts presented look at this under a sex-specific aspect. The results display significant differences in prior education patterns with male and female apprenticeship starters as regards the main and most attended schools that lead to an apprenticeship.
